I have been actively involved in sewing, needlework and handicrafts from a very young age. After graduating from Douglass College, Rutgers University, where I specialised in clothing, textiles and design, I studied fashion in New York City before working as a crafts editor for McCall's Needlwork & Crafts Magazine and Dover Publications.
Since I moved to England in 1984, I have published 13 books on quilt making, including The Complete Book of Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqu?© (Mitchell Beazley Publishers), Quilts Around the Year (Museum Quilts Publications), Country Quilts (Mitchell Beazley Publishers), Quilts: The American Story, with Susan Jenkins (HarperCollins) and Beautiful Patchwork Gifts (Sterling Publishers). My latest book, The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting, has just been published by Sixth&Spring. I have also published books on general crafts, crochet, knitting, and even one on babies. My books are sold all over the world and have been translated into many different languages.
Over the years, I have been a contributing crafts designer and editor for several American and British magazines and have edited dozens of books on both sides of the Atlantic on subjects ranging from all forms of needlework to cookery and travel. I have been writing At the Sharp End for The Quilters’ Guild magazine for over 10 years. I have had the privilege of judging several quilt exhibitions and contests and enjoy lecturing internationally on quilt making.
I am a member of the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, Contemporary Quilt and the London Quilters. I live in London with my British husband, three children and Border Terrier.
